The tremendous growth of international schools has created a need for advanced education for international school leaders. International schools have unique challenges, unique student populations, and unique curricular needs. International school leaders need to find ways to grow professionally, learn from other international school leaders, and take their learning back to re-invest in their school communities.
At USD, the PhD in Leadership Studies with a specialization in Leadership for International School Leaders is designed to serve the growing number of international school leaders and those who are interested in the themes of global education more generally. The program develops candidates with the knowledge and skills needed by educators to advance and excel in a career focused on international education.
This specialization attends to the importance of understanding leadership from a global perspective. It recognizes the inter-connectedness of our world and the value that can be gained from learning how global educators address the academic needs of students. The program includes significant interaction with our full time faculty, many of whom have held prior leadership roles within school environments and conducted educational research internationally. You will study among and learn from experts in the fields of economics, sociology, and organizational leadership.
With a PhD in Leadership Studies, and a specialization in Leadership for International School Leaders, you will emerge empowered as a researcher, scholar, educator and practitioner.
Leadership Studies Degree Program Highlights:
- Hybrid format including online and in person courses at USD’s satellite campus in Madrid, Spain.

- An international educational experience. Students are provided opportunities to take short-term coursework abroad, taught by Leadership Studies faculty.

Leadership Studies Degree Program Features:
- 57 Units
- 3 Year Average Completion Time, 2 courses expected per semester
- Summer Residencies - Two weeks in Madrid, Spain
- Online Courses - Two 7-week courses each fall and spring semester
- Dissertation
Leadership Studies Degree Coursework:
At the completion of all coursework, students are expected to complete a dissertation under the advisement of a USD faculty committee of scholars.
