Frequently Asked Questions about USD’s Master’s in Nonprofit Leadership and Management
Nonprofit Leadership and Management
If you're considering a graduate degree in leadership or management, sometimes you want to explore what it means to lead a team or to weigh the pros and cons of what you can learn in graduate school versus what you can learn from work experience.
But sometimes you just need quick, straightforward facts about a program. What is the structure? Can I afford it? Who will I be learning with? Can I work while in school?
Today, we're answering these questions and more about the USD MA in Nonprofit Leadership and Management, because getting the practical information you need should always be easy.
Who will you be learning with?
Our students are a very diverse group of professionals, the majority of whom work in mid-to-senior-level management positions at nonprofit corporations and philanthropies. They reflect the racial, ethnic and religious diversity of our region, and work for nonprofits across a spectrum of fields ranging from human services to the environment, health care to arts, philanthropy, and everything in between. Approximately one third of our students are in their 20's, one third are in their 30's and one third are over 40. A few of our students already have advanced degrees in other fields.
What do we look for in applicants?
We are looking for applicants who are already (or have the potential to be) leaders in the nonprofit community, people with critical thinking skills, good interpersonal skills, and strong writing skills. We have a preference for applicants who have professional experience or real-world knowledge that will help them immediately translate their learning in the program into concrete application for their work. All candidates are unique. Interested applicants are encouraged to discuss their qualifications with the admissions team or program director to determine eligibility.
When are classes offered?
Most of our classes take place from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. during weekday evenings. A small number are held earlier (5:30 p.m.) or on select weekend days. In addition, all students participate in an international experience of their choosing — either in San Diego or abroad — that is designed to expand their global perspective and to enhance their ability to understand and lead diverse organizations.
How long does it take to complete the MA in Nonprofit Leadership and Management?
The MA in Nonprofit Leadership and Management is a 36-unit program that can be completed in two academic years (including a summer session that bridges the first and second academic year). Students who are looking to complete the program in two years take at least 7 units per semester, optional courses during winter term, and a required 3-unit summer course. Students can also elect to undertake their studies on a part time basis, completing the degree in 2.5-3 years, depending on the pace they set for themselves. Approximately half of our students complete the degree in two years.
Can you work full-time and complete the program in two years?
Yes! This is one of the important features of our program. Students are learning in the classroom and then applying their learning in the context of their ongoing work. The majority of our students work full time.
What is the cost of the program?
The tuition rate for the current and upcoming cohort is available on our Tuition and Financing page. An annual scholarship of $1,000 to $2,000 is available for all nonprofit practitioners ($4,000 maximum during the length of your program).
Who should write your recommendation letters?
We like to see letters from people who know you and with whom you have a professional relationship – your immediate supervisor, a board member with whom your work closely, perhaps someone you supervise, or a colleague you collaborate with at a related organization. Letters from personal acquaintances/friends are not encouraged.
Do we provide job placement services?
No, we don’t, but 86% of our students report they have received a raise, new jobs or promotion as a direct result of their participation in our program. We have a robust alumni network who often hire fellow graduates. Additionally, we provide an informal job announcement distribution network that combined with the networks of our existing students, alumni and advisory board members helps many of our students land new and exiting jobs.
